I read this book a long time ago, first in a paperback translation, then in the original English and later, purchased some beautiful hardback editions of this title, plus LOTR and the Silmarillion, for my shelves, to go back to and enjoy this imaginary universe. Nevertheless, I also added the e-book version to my Kindle library.I have just finished this enhanced edition which is truly a pleasure to read and enjoy : although the illustrations -also by the author- are better seen on a large computer screen, they still can be enjoyed even on a Kindle (although the classic one would not allow colors) or an iPhone. But the main perk here is listening to Tolkien himself read some parts, both small and long ones, especially some of the rhyming "songs".The recent serialization for the big screen and the choice of actor to impersonate Mr Bilbo Baggins ("burglar" with a strong moral code), was very good ; but the second and third/final installment will be criticized for straying from the original and for introducing characters that did not exist in the original novel (Tauriel and Legolas...). But this is interesting too, because indeed the Elves were not strongly characterized in this novel which left lots to imagination. This was after all, to start with, only an extended tale told to the author's children, as Tolkien's son remembers in his long and informative introduction which delves also on linguistic features such as the reasons for the difference between ordinary spelling and Tolkien's choices (Elves instead of Elfs etc.). Tolkien had read a lot of old Scandinavian tales and sagas, and used words and echoes of these readings to create settings and characters such as Beorn the bear : Bjørn is both a first name and the name for a bear in Danish, for instance, and there is a saga translated into English by CS.Lewis from the Norse that tells the story of a shapeshifter ; although in that one, the Viking is suffering from a curse and terrorizes his village after his funeral. Tolkien's Beorn is dangerous too but not to his friends and he is a living being, not a ghost. In the movie though, I missed Bilbo's fascination with songs and rhymes... Our times are maybe too serious and too busy to take time humming and singing around camp fires? Young people now may have been brought up too much with video games that deal with battles and wars where singing and poetry has little place. The introduction, illustrations, and especially the recordings, add to the reading, and the ebook edition adds the possibility to look up words by clicking on them in order to access a dictionary or Wikipedia. Therefore, I strongly recommend this Enhanced ebook edition both to native, non native and young readers. May they have as much pleasure as I had, reading this before or after going to the cinema !
